WAT GAAN WE DOEN IN 2012 ?

Video midden op de Oceaan. 150 mijl van de Azoren. Truant, een andere deelnemer in de Azab, maakte de video. Ziet er heel relaxed uit, maar de werkelijkheid is dat eerst Truant zijn gennaker in het water kreeg bij het strijken. Gelukkig zonder scheuren weer aan boord. Vlak daarna knalde bij mij een blok eruit van de gennaker tackline. Ik moest dus ook strijken. We hebben toen maar van elkaar wat video beelden gemaakt. Gelukkig kon ik de tackline via andere blokken laten lopen en daarna kon het zeil weer omhoog. Inmiddels is voor mij het zeilseizoen afgelopen. Boot op de kant voor onderhoud. Te druk met werk om mee te doen aan winterwedstrijden. Liever heb ik het onderhoud op tijd klaar. Van alles te doen, zoals gebruikelijk. Nieuwe valstoppers, betere waterballastpomp, nieuwe grootzeil karren. En natuurlijk werk aan het onderwaterschip. Electronica heeft het zeer goed gehouden in de AZAB. Alles heeft van begin tot eind gewerkt. Energie voorziening ga ik wat verbeteren. Fuel cell zou mooi zijn, dan heb ik een alternatief als de motor niet wil starten. In 2012 wil ik meedoen aan een aantal leuke wedstrijden in Nederland. De afgelopen jaren is dat er niet van gekomen omdat ik steeds in mei/juni weg ben geweest vanwege BluQube 1000 mijl solo in 2008, nieuwe mast en daarna Fastnet in 2009, Round Britain 2010 en AZAB 2011. Op het Programma in 2012 staat : 50 mijl duo, 100 mijl Bruine Bank Race, Rondje Noord Holland, en 500 mijl solo (nieuw evenement, info volgt). Ook hoop ik eindelijk mee te kunnen doen aan de 200 mijl solo in september. De afgelopen jaren moest ik die steeds afzeggen vanwege drukte op mijn werk.

Safran

In Trinite sur Mer ligt Safran mooi te zijn aan de steiger. Wat Marc Guillemot allemaal heeft meegemaakt op die boot in enorm. Ik kijk mijn ogen uit naar al die mooie details op het dek.

Figaro

In Caen wordt de komst van de Figaro vloot aangekondigd door billboards overal in de stad. Dat is het betere werk!

TERUG IN LELYSTAD

Van Brighton naar Dover was het vooral een kwestie van zonnebrand paraat houden. Dover IJmuiden idem dito. En dan ben je opeens weer gewoon op het IJsselmeer. Bootje in de box, oude Renaultje start zowaar zonder haperen. Weer thuis en meteen weer aan het werk. Wat een geweldige race was dit.

Zojuist heb ik foto's van de Azab, inclusief voorbereidingen geplaatst.

Brighton

Midden in de nacht aangekomen. Na lekker uitslapen heb ik de hele dag
aan de boot gewerkt. Schitterend weer hier, en hopelijk komt dat ook
naar Nederland. morgenochtend voor dag en dauw met de vloed mee naar
Dover. Ik kijk even hoe het gaat. Tijstop, of door naar Ijmuiden.
Jemig, dan is het opeens bijna over...

Terug naar Nederland

Tijdens de AZAB stond deze blog doorgeschakeld op de Engelstalige AZAB
website. Nu ga ik weer door in het Nederlands.
Omdat het weer er goed uitziet om naar Nederland te zeilen, ben ik de
dag na aankomst weer uit Falmouth vertrokken. Nog heerlijk gelunchd met
mijn plaatselijke host Robert Hichens. In de middag met een lekker
NW windje onderweg. Er staat meer wind dan ik had durven hopen en ook
afgelopen nacht bleef het waaien. Steeds verder naar het Noorden draait
de wind en nu vaar ik zelf aan de wind tegen NO3 in. Prachtig weer. Een
hogedrukgebied komt er aan en zal mij inhalen vanuit het westen. Dan zal
de wind helemaal wegvallen vrees ik. Maar goed, daar heb je per slot van
rekening een motor voor. Het is nu geen zeilwedstrijd meer, dus die
gaat gewoon aan als het moet. Inmiddels voorbij Portland Bill. Met het
volgende tij langs St Catherines Point (Isle of Wight) en dan kijken
waar ik diesel kan tanken, haha. Brighton of Dover, ik zie het nog wel.

ROUND UP LEG 2

The weather has been exceptionally good. 7 days and 13 hours is better
than I ever thought. The other 2 Dutch entries, Nico Budel (Hayai) and
Kees Jan Lampe (La Promesse) came to see me in at the finish line
yesterday early in the morning at 04.08 hrs.
Today I will prepare the boat for the 450 miles to bring her back to
Lelystad.
I wish to thank to Collin Drummond and his team at RWYC for organizing
this great race. For the next edition I would like to suggest to have a
seperate class for single handers.

Quiet night

Yesterday evening Home of Jazz passed the edge of the continental shelf.
Disturbed seas for a number of hours. As always fisherman in this area,
with big ships and huge ligths. It was a good night for sailing
with just enough wind and beautiful clear skies and stars. The last
quiet night at sea for a while I'm afraid. Tomorrow we will be
approaching the Lizzard with more ships, fisherman, buoys and so on.
Early this morning (cold again, 12 degrees) I hoisted the Code Zero. It
will be close racing with Ntumbi and Merlin who both have a more
easterly position and have to point higher a bit higher. I can sail at
slightly better angles and use the Code Zero and perhaps the Gennaker
later, which might give me just the extra bit of speed to beat them.

Ella

Do dolphins like music? Yes, I believe they do. Often they visit the
boat at the end of the day. During diner I played some old recordings of
performances by Ella and this immediately attracked a group of dolphins.
They stayed longer then usual, obviously to listen to the music. After
they were gone a second group of black/white dolphins came alongside to
enjoy the music. Dolphins have sharp ears and apparently a good taste.
Would they like the military music Mervyn plays at redicoulous volumes
during the prestart of any race ? I learned from his wife that at home
he is not allowed to play any of that music, so that is probably why he
goes to sea. I can assure you that they like Ella Fidzgerald. Try it

iTunes, go to sea, play Yellow Basket and have your cameras ready.

What else ?

After my little beauty sleep this morning I see that the sun's come
through now. Only sevens and eights on the display. What else could a
single handed sailor wish for? Except of course for good company, a hot
shower, a cold beer .. eh.. let me stop here. Being on your own for a week
perfectly makes clear what is really important and what you can do
without.

BRRRR

Air temperature only 11 deg C .. That wasn't mentioned in the Notice of
Race! The notherly breeze brought us cold rainy weather. Last night we
had more wind then I expected with 20 kts. A very dark night, with no
moon or stars. You could hardly see the water or the horizon, so it felt
like the boat is floating on nothing. Short waves, unsettled, the
powering in 20kts of breeze. Like being in a simulator of the
IJsselmeer. I stayed inside for most of the night.
There are not so many tactical options left. The wind will stay NNW
according to the forecast. But you never know.

Gybed

It was a buzy night. After diner I changed from the small to the big
light gennaker. The Gribs forecasted Southerly 10-12 knots during the
night backing Westerly. We had for bundles of coulds coming over, some
with and some without wind in them. Very decent boatspeed and perhaps we
could overtake Ntumbi who is 10 miles ahead. And indeed, at 0200 I could
see a white light and at 0310 I had overtaken them. Just after
overtaking Ntumbi I started to prepare for the gybe. Gybing took an
hour! First the gennaker down. Then a stormround to avoid breaking
mainsail cars as I did in my last gybe. On port tack now I first had to
come around the stern of Ntumbi (so effectively I sailed around them,
sorry guys). Hoisted the gennaker but completely twisted. Took it
down again. Stowed it properly in a bag which gave a better result on
the second attempt to set the sail. After a small broach sudddenly in
18kts, things settled down and I could go in again.

HOME OF JAZZ - DINER

Happy hour with Borrelnootjes an original Dutch delight, much
appreciated by visiting sailors. Then a proper starter Veloutes de
Legumes, followed by Tartiflette Savoyarde (ou-la-la) and as desert
Creme Chocolade (comme l'amour c'est fantastique). All of this with a
magnificent Ocean View and a decent 8 knots under gennaker at 150 TWA.
Just great!

Learning to sail

High spirits on board Home of Jazz. I finally learned how to use the
heavy asymetric spinaker. This sail needs a spinnaker pole!!
During the Round Britain 2010 we (Harry Vogel and me) couldn't get the
new sail "in the groove". During AZAB I hoisted it several times
(halyard, sheet and tackline) only to take it down again after a short
while. Uncontrollable, not stable, small window to steer, and so on.
Really frustrating. The sail is intended for sailing at 150 degree True
Wind Angle. Now what a huge difference it is to hoist it with a spi-pole
about 1 meter to luff. Now very stable, boat well balanced, perfect! So
the sail has been up all day. The autopiot can deal with it easily. I
could catch up some sleep. Glorious sunshine, shirts and shorts, top
day!!

Emergency repair

When I want to put the kettle on the origo cooker appeared to be broken.
One of the hinches eat itself through the metal bracket. Lucky
that bicycle repair man bought himself a new drill to fix the problem.

Long run

After two days of running in the sunshine, I almost forgot what clouds
look like. Some pretty strong gusts of wind but no rain. It looks like
the long run will continue until Sunday noon, and on Monday a notherly
breeze will come in. Brr I have to find my socks.

Genaker adventures

After a nice night gooze winged I wished to increase speed this morning.
Hoisted a heavy gennaker in 21 knots of breeze. As soon as the sail went
up it was all hands on deck. Single handed that means, handsteering
and sheet in the other hand, no hand available to work on the tackline
or anything else. This was soon to go wrong so I threw the halyard
overboard to bear away and take down the sail. Then we almost broached,
the sail collapsed, filled again and went around the forestay. I
immediately released the tack and blew the halyard and could pull the
sail down before it was jammed. Pfff. Now goozed winged again. Double
handed boats really have an advantage in these conditions compared to
single handed boats. The advantage of sailing gooze winged is that Home
of Jazz can sail much deeper compared to boats without a spinnaker pole
who will have to gybe to avoid being caught by the high. We might just
make it if we can stay a bit north of the rumbline.

Running

With the wind almost following our track, the options are either to
hoist a gennaker, and gybe to avoid going too farr south into the high,
or to go gooze winged (if you have a pole!). I decided to go gooze
winged and gain some terrain to the north. The dyneema backstays show
wear from the main near the top of the mast. Hmm. I have to watch this
carefully. Everything around the mainsail seems to cause trouble, but
that is my own fault because I did only try the sail a few times before
the race, in stead of testing it over a longer period. Good winds
and good speed during the night. I treated myself with the luxury of 30
minute sleeps in stead of 20. All well on board Home of Jazz.

Home of Jazz - Around the high

In day two of the race a lot of suncream was needed. And a lot of work
was to be done with the gennaker and code zero. Truant sailed next to me
for a while. I had to let him go when I needed to repair a damaged
sheave. Tried to catch up with Truant but got too tired and hoisted the
jib for the night. The wind soon picked up and I pulled in a first and
second reef. Fast sailing through the night, but I could get some
sleep.. It looks like this low is going to give us a lot of wind indeed,
and from the right direction too.

Windy start of leg 2

I must admit my start was chaotic. And 25 knots was a bit too much for
my taste. And I was not the only one. I saw boats with water ballast on
the wrong side, reefs that wouldn't fit and so on. We first rounded a
buoy 1,7 miles out before heading down to the west. I did a storm round
in stead of a gybe. Along the islands winds were gusting up to 29 knots,
but plenty of sunshine too and a beautiful view on the island where we
had such a great week. During the evening things settled down and the
wind died out. On our way again!

Hard to resist the offer of my youngest daughter Janneke to join me on the return leg, but her mama insisted .. so back on my own now.

As you can see the headboard and two sail battens are not anymore connected to the mast. I put more tension on the halyard to keep the sail closer to the mast. I was lucky to be able to fix this with just enough spares and a calm sea.

Home of Jazz - becalmed near finish

Yesterday evening land in sight! Great view of the island from a
distance while the sun going down. At midnight I passed Caba Armel and
after that it became very difficult with the wind shadow of the Island.
At 05.00 the wind died out. Sails down at 06.00 and up again at 08.30.
Now fast approaching the finish line in drizzle. I expect some sunshine
when I get then in about 1,5 hours.

Home of Jazz - Glorious sunshine sailing

What a beautiful day! Blue sky, deep blue water, white foam and he
prospect of seeing the contours of Sao Miguel later today. Yesterday I
got too tired. Stupid mistake off course. I started making mistakes. But
after all the work being done the boat could sail at some speed through
the night while I was catching up sleep. Now feeling much better, reefed
out and full speed again. My boat is very dry but nevertheless
everything is rather wet on board.

Home of Jazz - Finally tacked

Today was a really rough day with winds in the 30+ region for many
hours. At 19.00 I tacked when the baro stopped falling. Shook a reef out
and changed a jib in difficult sea conditions, even dangeros to work at
deck. Et maintenant le captain va cherger son couchette.

Home of Jazz - Upwind battle

What a magnificent race this is. A great variety of sailing conditions
including upwind sailing in a force 5/6. I am trying to catch up a few
boats if possible. Truant and FanFan (both also single handed I believe)
passed me when I had mainsail problems and I am trying hard to come back
now. A warm wind is blowing from SW. Just a T-shirt under my foulies.

Home of Jazz - Chapter Three

This leg seems to have three chapters: chapter one "Reaching Down",
chapter two "Depression Crossing our Path", and now we just started the
third and last chapter "Beating into the Azores". The chapters are
devided by extended calms.
Reaching Down went pretty well for me, but I did not very well with the
low and suffered nasty damage that slowed me down for a day. Now beating
into the Azores has started. Over the next couple of days the wind is
right on the noze, it will increase a bit before shifting to the west.
Last night there was a spectacular moonset. In combination with some sea
fog this created an amazing light show with strange reflections.

HOME OF JAZZ MAINSAIL FIXED

I can't tell you how happy I am that the main is fixed. Although still
choppy seas, I decided to give it a go in stead of waiting till after
dark for the calms to set in according to the grib files. In my head I
repeated every stept to take for the repair a hundred times today.
Almost I blew it. Tired now but very happy that all the mainsail cars in
the (square) top are replaced. On my way again! I will have to catch up a
few boats upwind. Tadaa!!

MAINSAIL HOME OF JAZZ

I haven't been able to repair the mainsail cars yet due to lumpy seas.
The wind will drop tonight and hopefully conditions will get better to
take the main off the mast track. Due to this Home of Jazz has sailed
all day with 3 reefs. Better then nothing, and not very racy, but in the
right direction.

MAIN SAIL TROUBLE

Yesterday I was becalmed most of the day until finally the SE winds took
me into the depression. I took Home of Jazz just west of the centre of
the low and reduced sail for the heavy NE winds that followed during
the night. Very careful with 3 reefs and a small jib. A bit underpowered
but I have to be careful with my mainsail. Early in the morning things
went wrong. I decided to gybe. First I prepared the manouvre in detail
and it all went well, a smooth gybe in 23 knots. But when I looked up
I was that the headboard and 2 cars had broken down. The top part of the
main is completely disconnected from the mast.
On the delivery trip to Falmouth I also broke a mainsail car, so I know
how to repair it. I have just enough spares, including a headboard.
Conditions are too rough now for repairs, so i will try to prevent
further damage. Taking down the sail might cause other cars to break
too. So i will continue under three reefs until the sea is a bit calmer.
i will have to take the main competely from the mast, which is not easy.
I have only one possibility to repair and it better be successful or I
can't sail upwind anymore. Guess what is in the forecast? Indeed, so I
have one day to fix this.

Change

Day 4 was a beautiful sailing day, with in the afternoon some nice
sunshine too. During the night the wind died out and now I am becalmed.
The grib files show that a depression will cross our path from NW to SE.
This will bring some strong winds for tonight. So I better prepare
myself today.

Day 3 Home of Jazz

Mixed conditions with winds between 15 and 25 knots. I kept the jib up
and adjusted the main (approx 10x reefs in and out). In the evening more
settled winds from NW. I received some nice messages from frieds ashore.
Great. I was completely surprised by the quality of the boil in a bag
dinner. Frech cuisine! Great stuff from RTW foods. Some 30 minute sleeps
during the night. 2 reefs in. Dawn is breaking later, since we are going
south. In the morning 1st reef and exiting handsteering. All well on
board. Cheers!

Fast sailing during 2nd night

Two reefs and a working jib, all night. Max wind on board Home of Jazz
34 knots true. Not so much trafic anymore since we passed the continental
shelf. Apparently Home of Jazz is listed in the wrong class. Should be
class 1 and not 2. Three sails at the horizon so the race in pretty close.
Repaired 2 hanks of the jib that got stuck. Put the sail back on because
nasty looking clouds are approching.

Bricolage

THis morning all kind of technical issues, including chafe on 2
halyards. Now racing again in N 27kts. Working jib and 2 reefs. The
strong wind will continue the coming night.

First night

The start was wonderful, with many spectator boats and a crowd on the
shore. In stead of the expected NE winds, we had light headwinds with
strong effects from the land. Very tacktical. I was happy to see that I
could stay with the pack in class 4 in these conditions. Home of Jazz is
the smallest boat in its class. During the night the wind started to
turn to notherly directions. I hoisted the small gennaker, to anticipate
for the stronger winds in the forecast. The gennaker could stay up until
04.15 when I broached repeatedly. Now in about 20 kts and .. rain, so I
will take another quick 20 minute nap. All well on board Home of Jazz

Last preparations

Today I started with a list of works on the boat, before going to the Race Briefing at the RCYC and the weather briefing. The weather is just unbelieveable: winds from the north for the next days. So far I have only seen headwinds, so this is a major change for me.
My right ankle has suddenly swollen. I fell down a few days ago while sailing. Bartel on Woofies Toys is a docter and has taken a look at it. e wasn't looking too happy, so now I am a bit worried how this will develop.

Falmouth

After repairing the broken mainsail car in Dartmouth, I had a good night sleep and left in the morning for Falmouth. The wind died out but picked upagain later from the NW, finally, and I came in before dark.
Today provisioning, tomorrow work on the boat. And tonight the welcome dinner, where I will meet many friends and other sailors. Really looking forward to that.

yesterday i broke one of the cars of the main. Pulled into Dartmouth . Now repaired and on my way again.

Towards Start Point

After leaving Dover in mist I had a slow start. Beating to
Dungeness, Beachy Head, past Brighton. The NW-erlies appeared at the
right time. Last night I passed St Catherines point in 30kts. Today it
is beautiful upwind sailing towards Start Point. Tomorrow I will arrive
in Falmouth. All well on board Home of Jazz.

MEANWHLE IN DOVER

As you may have noticed it is not easy to get from Holland to Falmouth. SW-erlies all the time and a bit rough too. I fell down in the cabin and crushed one of cabin lockers. Yesterday I repaired this damage in Dover where I am still waiting for the force 7 to calm down a bit. Tomorrow conditions look good for the leg to Falmouth.

Finally at sea

Today the wind eased off to wnw 20-25 kts. Crossed the Maas entrance and
now heading for Dover. Martin Seller is with me. It is better not to be
single handed in these very busy waters. All fine on board. We will sail
to Cowes, where Martin will step off, probably on Sunday. The last few
days I will have some single handed training miles, before arraiving in
Falmouth.

STILL IN SCHEVENINGEN

Due to bad weather Home of Jazz is still in Holland. The good news is that I have a new delivery crew. Martin Selles will join me, great. Looks like we can leave tomorrow. The SW 7-9 has declined somewhat this evening.

EINDELIJK VERTROKKEN

Vandaag eindelijk vertrokken om 06.00. Alleen, want de wegbreng
bemanning is op het laatst afgehaakt. Gisteren nog dikke West 6 tegen.
Nu licht weer en zon, maar dat is maar voor even want er komt Zuid West
7 aan. Ik had gehoopt dat net voor te kunnen blijven, maar de gribfiles
van vanochtend laten zien dat dat niet gaat lukken. Heb besloten er een
lekkere zeiltrainingsdag van te maken en naar Scheveningen te zeilen.
Oefenen met het nieuwe grootzeil dat pas voor de 3e keer omhoog is. En
zonnebrand smeren!

1 week voor vertrek

Nog 1 week en dan vertrek ik naar Falmouth voor de Azores And Back Race. Nog zoveel te doen.. Nieuw grootzeil komt deze week binnen als het goed is. En de remote van de autopilot, ook erg handig. Fingers crossed.

Het aftellen is begonnen

Op 22 mei a.s. vertrek ik naar de startlijn van de AZAB. De start is op 4 mei. 2400 mijl solo. Nog nooit heb ik zo lang solo gevaren. Het is een schitterende uitdaging en ik heb er enorm veel zin in. Nog zoveel te doen, en zoveel tegelijk. 80% van het werk zit in de voorbereiding. Alle details zijn belangrijk. Het is een eindsprint tot 22 mei. Dan kan ik de knop gaan omzetten voor de laatste 20%. Spannend is het zeker. Niet alleen als wedstrijd, maar ook als uitdaging op zich, om het te volbrengen. Je stapt aan boord en bent daarna zonder enige ontsnapping volkomen onderworpen aan alle geselingen die de natuur in petto heeft. De laatste dagen voor de start loop ik ongetwijfeld weer met een steen in mijn maag rond. Na de start zal dat gevoel snel verdwijnen, zo weet ik inmiddels uit ervaring. De mens lijdt het meest door het lijden dat hij vreest.

WEER HELEMAAL STRAK

Antislib verf op dek, antifouling, orange, wax, motorbeurt, schilderwerk, dan door naar de tuiger op donderdag voor een dubbele achterstag ivm square top grootzeil.

50 mijl

Wat een schitterende zeildag gisteren. Lekker windje. 20-25 knopen met uitschieters tot 30kn. De baan had veel aan de windse rakken. Op ruimere stukken rif eruit. De diepere rakken waren nogal kort om solo de gennaker te zetten. Aan de wind liep Home of jazz hard en hoog , das dat ging lekker.

SLAAPPLAATS

Als ik alleen zeil, dan slaap ik meestal niet in een kooi maar midden in de kajuit. Gisteren heb ik wat zitten experimenteren met 2 zitzakken die ik an boord heb. Zo is het best confortabel. En je kan natuurlijk varieren in allerlei standen.

PASEN

Op vrijdagmiddag ben ik vertrokken voor een rondje training tot laat in de avond. Veel gijpen met de asymetrische spi. Ik merk dat ik inmiddels veel beter met dat zeil overweg kan. Heel veel gegijpt en vanalles geprobeerd om het beter te laten lopen. Omdat de boegspriet niet zo lang is, is er niet zoveel ruimte om het zeil binnendoor te gijpen. Buitenom is altijd een gedoe met schoten die onder de boot komen. Inmiddels lukt het steeds beter. Tack losser en goed het zeil "kantelen" (met dank aan Ysbrand voor de tip). Toch gaat het natuurlijk nog een paar keer goed mis en tot drie keer toe moet het zeil compleet worden gestreken om het weer uit te knoop te krijgen. Vooral in weinig wind is het lastig om het zeil goed voor de voorstag te krijgen om te gijpen. Met meer wind gaat het een stuk gemakkelijker.

Pasen

Als je komende nacht een bootje ziet gaan over het IJsselmeer dan ben ik het. Schitterend weer, en nog wind ook. Kan niet beter. Maar deze keer zonder bemanning.

Op 9 april 2011 heeft Ysbrand van Endt een training in solozeilen gegeven aan het Team Shorthanded waar ik sinds een maand deel van uitmaak. Met mijn VQ32 Home of Jazzheb ik meegedaan aan de training samen met Klaas Wiersma. Het was een zeer geslaagde en leerzame dag.
Om 09.30 verzamelen we in het "Shorthanded hok" in Flevo Marina Lelystad. Er doen vandaag 5 boten mee. 3 mini's, een Pogo 850 en wij met een VQ32. De meeste boten hebben 2 man aan boord. Aanvankelijk vreesde ik te moeten afzeggen omdat ik al lang een afspraak had staan met Klaas Wiersma om op 9 april te gaan zeilen met mijn VQ32 Home of Jazz. Prima om 2 man aan boord te hebben, zo legt Ysbrand tijdens de koffie uit, dan kan je het niet-actieve bemanningslid even uitrusten of als super-intelligente stuurautomaat fungeren. Ysbrand heeft de afgelopen paar jaar samen met Christa een uitgebreide training doorlopen bij een van de beste Franse trainingscentra, speciaal voor solozeilen in mini's. Ysbrand zal proberen om iets van de daar verworven kennis en vaardigheden op ons over te brengen.

Voordat we het water op gaan nemen we uitgebreid het programma door. Eerst warmvaren, halve wind heen en weer om twee boeien op een kort baantje. Dan een windward leeward baan, en tenslotte een wedstrijdje. Iedereen krijgt de gelegenheid om aan te geven aan welke punten hij/zij wil werken. De belangrijkste manoeuvres worden vervolgens in detail doorgenomen, met aandacht voor de volgorde van handelingen, de timing en het gebruik van de autopilot. Het is interessant om in detail te horen hoe bijvoorbeeld mini's het grootzeil gijpen door de nieuwe bakstag aan te trekken. Mijn aandachtspunt voor vandaag, de gennaker gijp, krijgt ruim aandacht in de voorbespreking. Op een mini gaat het zo: op de autopilot tot TWA 165 deg, dan de spi kantelen naar loef, insturen, schoot vieren, schoothoek voor de voorstag, snel de schoot aantrekken over de nieuwe boeg, dan het grootzeil gijpen.

Het wordt tijd om het water op te gaan. Klaas en ik varen meteen uit, zodat Klaas even kan wennen aan mijn boot die hij nog helemaal niet kent. We zeilen vervolgens om beurten solo om de boeitjes, de warming up. Bij elk rondje zie ik dat Klaas beter gaat. Dan volgt een oefening waarbij we op signaal naar het begeleidingsbootje moeten opkruisen, waar Ysbrand en Yvette in zitten. Yvette legt alles op video vast en krijgt zo meteen mooi beelden van alle boten van dichtbij. Ysbrand geeft iedereen aanwijzingen over de zeiltrim. Vanuit het bootje kan hij het natuurlijk mooi zien.

Warm zijn we nu wel, en de wind is zowaar niet afgenomen maar juist aangewakkerd tot 17 knopen. Strakblauwe lucht, wat wil je nog meer. Snel even zonnebrand smeren voordat de volgende oefening begint: windward leeward op een baantje van ongeveer 2 mijl. Dat betekent vol aan de bak met de grote gennaker die we klaar hebben liggen. We doen we ongeveer vijf rondjes, met per rondje 2 of 3 gijpen die met wisselend succes verlopen. Ook nu weer nuttige tips van Ysbrand over de trim, al wordt de communicatie wat lastig omdat het begeleidingsbootje, waar hij in zit, ons nauwelijks kan bijhouden.

Tenslotte een kort wedstrijdje, altijd leuk. De lijn ligt er een beetje scheef in en we starten daarom helemaal aan de pin end. Goed weg op volle snelheid. Overstag voor de andere boten langs, maar dat is eigenlijk geen kunst want Home of Jazz is aan de wind gewoon een stuk sneller dan de andere boten. Na de bovenboei (EZ ton) moeten we eerst uitwijken voor een binnenvaartschip, daarna gijpen en spi erop. Koud kunstje, gaat allemaal soepeltjes. Aan het eind van deze trainingsdag lijkt het wel alsof Klaas en ik al veel langer samen varen.

Terug in het Shorthanded hok volgt de nabespreking met video beelden. Ik heb dit als zeer nuttig ervaren. Je kan opmerkingen over zeiltrim veel beter plaatsen als je de beelden er bij ziet. Ondanks bier, wijn en bittergarnituur, bleef iedereen tot het eind geboeid tot bij de les.
Het was een zeer geslaagde dag. Ik heb er van genoten en ik denk dat ik namens het hele Team Shorthanded kan zeggen dat we alweer uitkijken naar de volgende training.

COLDHANDED CUP

Maar dan zonder koude handen, want het werd 's middags heerlijk weer. Kan heel anders zijn op 26 maart. Leuk dat Vandal ook op het water was. De heren kwamen er speciaal voor over gevlogen uit Lerwick. Harry Vogel had een nachtje doorgezeild (en dat was wel koud!) maar verscheen niettemin solo aan de start. Wat een dag. Veel plezier gehad met Wessel aan boord, vooral om ons eigen gestuntel met de gennaker gijp. Maar hij bleef wel mooi vol staan, ondanks de gordiaanse knoop aan dek. Meer power in het grootzeil zou mooi zijn. Nu ik toch een nieuw grootzeil nodig heb, ben ik van plan een zogenaamd flattop grootzeil te nemen. Zal wel moeilijk liggen met de rating, maar ik denk dat het veel winst zal opleveren in licht weer. Dick gaat er aan rekenen en op korte termijn wil ik dan beslissen. Anders is er geen tijd meer om het op tijd afgeleverd te krijgen.

HISWA PRESENTATION WITH SYB VAN DER PLOEG

On Friday 4th March 11.30 hrs the first Milestones CD will be presented to Syb van der Ploeg in the Hiswa Zeiltheatre. Maarten will give a short presentation about the making of the CD. Syb will join Maarten to perform "Sailing" by Christopher Cross. Be there !

RELEASE CD MILESTONES DURING HISWA

On 4th March 2011 the CD Milestones by Maarten Russchen will be released during the HISWA. Maarten will be present at the Hiswa Zeiltheater on Friday 4th, Saterday 5th and Sunday 6th March to present the CD and perform a number of pieces live on stage.

TEAM SHORTHANDED

Yesterday I was accepted as a member of the Team Shorthanded.nl The idea is to share experiences, to learn from each other and to have some good fun together. The team has an excellent staff to support media and communication.

CD MILESTONES

The CD Milestones will be released in January/February 2011. The album contains music for acoustic guitar solo, composed and performed by me. The sea has been the main inspiration for this music and the compositions were partly written at sea. You can pre-order the CD by sending an email to Maarten.Russchen@hotmail.com with your name and address and by paying EUR 15 into the ABN AMRO bank account 50.86.68.158 of Vreemde Eend BV, Amersfoort. After receipt the CD will be sent to your address. The profits (hopefully) will be fully used to finance the racing program of Home of Jazz.

One of my great new supporters is Bart Rosemuller of Bootverkopers.nl. I am very pleased with his support. But I have to be careful with this guy. He will sell my boat in no time, haha ! No, I won't change horses. The VQ32 is an excellent boat for the heavy stuff. Really looking forward to be out on the water again. Skating is fun, but now that we've done that an early spring would be most welcome.
